HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

People with fresh resolutions are wasting no time hitting the treadmills. But what's keeping them going?

Its 10:30 a.m. on New Year's Day and gym goers are ready to break a sweat.

"I was motivated, I got up, and I said ‘Here I am,'" one woman said.

This will be one of the busiest weeks of the year for fitness centers.

"Most definitely we're going to be picking up every day from here on out through about February, March," Tim Webster, the general manager of Workout Anytime, said.

And according to Webster, for a lot of people, just showing up at his place is a great first step.

"You made the toughest step coming in through that front door. The rest of it is easy now," he said.

And keeping that determination throughout the year is only a matter of focusing on what you want changed.

"Once you find out what those goals are, it's easier to hone in on them. And okay, I know where I want to start you off. ‘I want to lose the mid-section,' we need to start you on our cardio," Webster said.

Photojournalist's fitness journey continues in the Knoxville Journal

This ongoing series in The Knoxville Journal chronicles one journalist's journey to personal fitness with Workout Anytime.  He has already profiled two of the outstanding personal trainers at Workout Anytime Powell, and this week he introduces us to a third member of the team.

Workout Anytime for everyone
By Wes Hall for The Knoxville Journal

In mid-September, this 61-year-old photojournalist joined a Workout Anytime Powell Boot Camp to get more fit, increase stamina, improve my cardiovascular health. and hopefully lose some weight. After 12 weeks, I am proud to say I am still on track to reach my goals. So far, I have accomplished what I consider a lot more than I had hoped. I have lost nearly 20 pounds, bringing four inches off my waist. I am eating more healthily. My energy level has increased as my blood sugar has gone down. Those who don’t see me often comment on how much younger I look, even though I have since let my white beard grow out.

At Workout Anytime Powell, the Boot Camp makes it easier to participate, because working out becomes a part of the weekly routine. When left on our own, many would procrastinate. I didn’t believe before I started I really had time for it. It didn’t take long for me to realize that an hour a day, three days a week for 13 weeks could make so much of a difference. The difference is not only a healthier lifestyle now, but 50 hours of exercise could add a few years to my time here on earth. Perhaps, I will get to enjoy future grandchildren despite my diabetes and heart disease.

Powell Workout Anytime focuses on individual health

I have never been a very physical person, but I usually went at a fast pace until 2003 when surgeons performed four bypasses on my heart. I felt better but I did slow my pace.

Last month I began “Boot Camp” with Workout Anytime on Emory Road at Clinton Highway in Powell.

Three days a week, I join three others and a trainer to build my body back up to near its potential. So far, I have lost about 10 pounds and at least an inch off my waist. The most significant advantage is my energy level is improving. I find myself making a faster stride than a few weeks ago.
