The Dumbbell Snatch - Your Key to Power

The Barbell Snatch is unquestionably one of the most amazing exercises you can do to develop power – the ability to produce lots of force quickly! Power is king in athletic performance and it helps us mere mortals in many situations as well. There are several popular power exercises, but the barbell snatch is thought by many professional conditioning coaches to be the best way to develop total body power. Unfortunately it is not an easy exercise to learn, and it can take months of work with an experienced Olympic Lifting Coach to master the movement. More importantly, if you do not do it correctly or if you have issues with shoulder, hip, or ankle mobility; you can hurt yourself trying to do this lift. Enter the dumbbell snatch!

Start with feet apart and feet rotated out slightly from your hips. Feet should be slightly wider than shoulder width. Hold a dumbbell with one hand in front of your thighs with your knuckles facing forward. Squat down keeping torso upright and maintaining a slight arch in your lower back. Arm holding dumbbell is kept straight with dumbbell between the legs with knuckles still facing forward.   Do not let the shoulder slouch forward or down! The movement is initiated by driving up quickly by extending the knees and hips. Picture yourself jumping up in the air holding a dumbbell. As you come up shrug your shoulders and pull the dumbbell upward, allowing your elbow to pull up and to the side of your head. Keep the elbow over the dumbbell as long as possible. Then pull your body under the dumbbell, catching it at arm’s length while moving into the squat position. Once you catch the dumbbell over your head, stand up with dumbbell overhead. Lower dumbbell to your shoulder then down to the original position in front of your thigh and repeat.

Simply put think: jump, shrug, drive elbow, and catch the dumbbell overhead!

Here is a great video of the dumbbell snatch from Michael Boyle:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRA_8jrlT3U and another view here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpE1ZtbZQpQ

Start with a relatively light weight – 20 – 25lbs men – 15 – 20lbs woman. However, once you get a little feel for the movement, you need to go up in weight – you want to use enough load that you have to use the power of your legs and hips to generate the power to throw the weight up – your upper body just guides the dumbbell – it does not do the heavy lifting!

After a dynamic warm-up do sets of 3 – 5 reps on each side starting with 2 – 3 sets each side to 5 sets each side with sufficient recovery between sets so that you can focus on doing each repetition with good form!

Interested in opening your own WORKOUT ANYTIME?

Think big. Keep it simple. Do it with integrity.”

Those are the guiding words of John Quattrocchi, co-founder of WORKOUT ANYTIME. Together with Steve Strickland, John and Steve have drawn from their 40 years of industry knowledge to create a proven, ready-to-run business opportunity for your success.

Proven Formula – The WORKOUT ANYTIME system operates with low-overhead and delivers high customer satisfaction. Our clubs fit into a range of retail spaces, can be run by a tiny staff, and offer the best workout per square foot in the industry. Unprofitable amenities like the pool, spa, courts, aerobics classes, and childcare have been eliminated in favor of a $15 no-commitment price that keeps members onboard month after month after month.

“People join a club to lose weight, build strength and feel better,” explains CEO Steve Strickland. “But eventually, they fall off because of two things: high price and inconvenience. We built a system that offers an unbeatable workout, an inexpensive recurring payment, and 24-7 neighborhood convenience.”

Matrix Equipment – Top equipment is a crucial component of the WORKOUT ANYTIME formula. Steve Strickland’s career experience in both the equipment and club sides of the industry has guided the equipment selection and floor plan. The WORKOUT ANYTIME fitness layout ensures that members never have to wait for the much-desired Matrix treadmills (10+) and cardio gear.

Easy to Get Started – Franchisees usually join WORKOUT ANYTIME with little or no experience in the fitness industry. Some even keep their existing jobs. Yet, our turnkey systems, vendor agreements, equipment sourcing and leasing support make it easy to get started and easy to succeed. Here’s how our ready-to-run approach guides you every step of the way:

Site Selection and Lease Negotiation

- We maintain a network of experienced real estate brokers nationwide who specialize in tenant representation
- Site selection/lease negotiation service offered at no-cost to franchise owner
- In most cases WORKOUT ANYTIME Franchisees receive a generous tenant improve allowance (cash), and up to 6-months free rent per deal

Franchisee Spotlight: Eric and Jen Cowden

Eric Cowden, a Lexington native, graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1996 and started working in sales and marketing for a communications company that does voiceover IT, networking systems and internet protocol. Following, Eric worked for the local FOX network in Lexington and then started a bar/restaurant in 2001. Eventually selling the location, Eric went back into sales and marketing, which he has been doing since 2002.

Jen Cowden graduated in 2002 from the University of Akron and grew up in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Jen’s professional background is also in marketing and she worked for the same organization Eric worked for in the local Ohio branch for nearly 10 years. In the last two years, Jen moved to Lexington to continue her career, helping to plan the first steps in the Workout Anytime business.

Eric, 40 years old, and Jen 33, are married and continue to work full-time. They will operate the Workout Anytime location concurrent with their other positions. They also both have extensive family-run business experience, which will be valuable for the Workout Anytime operation and get them ready for the next phase of their career.

How did you learn about the brand?
Greg Parker, he’s the area developer for Workout Anytime and also a frat partner. I saw the success he was having and it seemed to fit because of my interest in health and fitness, and all of the healthful changes in society going on.

Why did you choose an opportunity with Workout Anytime?
The equipment is state-of-the-art and we felt Lexington could use some place such as this, emphasizing customer service, bargainfitness, no contracts, etc. It’s also a town people travel to frequently for business and this gives them a chance to take in a quick, affordable workout.

Are you involved with any charities or do any community outreach with your business?
We work with the Makenna Foundation, which is a local charity that supports the UK Children’s Hospital.

What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now?
It’s really been finding the proper location because without that, the business model doesn't work. With 150,000-plus households in a 3.5 mile radius, we wanted to make sure we found the perfect spot because we do think we offer a unique spin to the workout community of Lexington.

What are your expansion or development plans? What is your end goal with Workout Anytime?
We want to have short-term goals and within a year add a second location, a third within two years, and start branching out into several areas.

Do you have any other interesting hobbies or passions?

We’re both involved in fitness and enjoy any outdoors activities or sports, such as golf and basketball.

 — Nekisha Dickerson gave her personal trainer, Don Wisby, an exasperated look Friday when he jokingly asked her to do another set of leg raises at the end of their first training session at Workout Anytime Fitness.
He’d already had the Stockbridge resident doing several exercises, including standing cable wood chops and cable pulls before the leg raises. When she gave him the look, he let out a laugh.
“She’s handled it — she wanted to give up but she pushed through,” said Wisby later.

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- How's this for a transformation? A man goes from running Domino's Pizza franchises in Tennessee and Kentucky to operating a workout facility in Huntsville.

But it's true. Not only did Greg Powers have eight Domino's Pizza stores, he also had a couple of car washes and a storage facility.

He still has a car wash but no Domino's franchises. His focus is now Workout Anytime at 4925 University Drive.
